Teen Trends: Insights into Generation Z

Social media, technology use, gun violence, obesity, and mental health issues are just some of the national headlines about today’s teens. The question is, are the headlines consistent with what is reported through national data sets? This webinar will highlight key youth trends such as engagement in risky behaviors, health indicators, technology use, youth employment, and educational attainment. The presentation discuss how teachers, families, and community members see these trends play out in their own lives and communities. A time for discussion about implications for FCS program delivery will also be included in the webinar.
This webinar examines several national data sets that help provide insights on Generation Z. By reviewing the types of behaviors young people are engaging, how they spend their time, and their health habits FCS professionals can insights on their daily interacts with youth, how best to prepare them for their future, and programming and research needs of this generation. Gaining this knowledge with enable FCS professionals to be the leader in address the holistic needs of today’s young people.
After this webinar participants will be able to:
- State adolescent health trends;
- Identify trends in teen use of technology;
- Recall educational trends of youth;
- Recognize major national youth data sets;
- Interpret data to make decisions about classroom content or curriculum to meet the needs of today’s youth; and
- Use data to determine the best ways to meet the challenges faced by today’s youth.
About the Presenter(s):
Michelle Krehbiel, PhD, is a youth development specialist and associate professor at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Extension 4-H Youth Development. Her work focuses on creating positive youth development environments in out-of-school and informal education settings. Michelle received her BS in Home Economics Education from Bethel College, North Newton, KS and MS and PhD from Kansas State University in Family Studies and Human Services. She is a certified family life educator (CFLE) and a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and National Council of Family Relations.
